Sex domestic violence
April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month , an opportunity to educate people and raise awareness about sexual assault. Sexual violence refers to crimes like sexual assault, rape, and sexual abuse. In the United States, 1 in 5 women will be raped in her lifetime , and nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men will experience sexual violence victimization other than rape. With the recent MeToo movement, sexual violence has never been such a large part of our national conversation. But what about sexual abuse victims whose abusers are not a stranger or an acquaintance? What about victims who are sexually abused by an intimate partner?

Domestic Violence and Abuse

Quick Guide: Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse
When people think of domestic abuse, they often focus on domestic violence. But domestic abuse includes any attempt by one person in an intimate relationship or marriage to dominate and control the other. Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain total control over you. Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone; it does not discriminate. Abuse happens within heterosexual relationships and in same-sex partnerships. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more often victimized, men also experience abuse —especially verbal and emotional.

Domestic violence
Sexual violence most often is perpetrated by someone a survivor knows, and this includes intimate partner relationships. There are many different terms to refer to sexual violence that occurs within intimate partnerships, including: intimate partner sexual violence, domestic violence, intimate partner rape, marital rape, and spousal rape. Intimate partner sexual violence can occur in all types of intimate relationships regardless of gender identities or sexual orientation. Intimate partner sexual violence is not defined by gender or sexuality, but by abusive behavior.

Physical abuse can leave the telltale signs of black eyes, broken bones and bruises. Psychological abuse can result in a bevy of invisible scars that have survivors doubting their own instincts and which lower their self-esteem and make them untrusting of others for years to come. Sexual abuse can combine the worst of both of those worlds.
